Terrorist Carlos the Jackal is coming to the Sundance Channel and then to U.S. theaters via IFC Films.

The Sundance Channel will air the three-part French miniseries “Carlos,” directed by Olivier Assayas, in the spring.

Under a deal struck at the Amrican Film Market, IFC Films will then distribute a shortened version of the miniseries in the fall, both in theaters and as a simultaneous VOD offering.

The film stars Edgar Ramirez, of “Che” and “Domino,” as Illich Ramirez Sanchez, who was known as Carlos the Jackal, the mastermind behind a wave of assassinations and terrorist attacks that swept Europe and the Middle East in the ’70s and ’80s. The film, which was shot in Austria, France, Germany, Hungary and Morocco with an international cast, was produced by Studio Canal and Film En Stock’s Daniel Leconte and Jens Meuer in association with Sundance Channel. It is half in English and half in other languages such as Spanish and French. It will air on Canal Plus early next year.

Harold Vanlier and Anna Marsh of Studio Canal negotiated the deal.

IFC’s Jonathan Sehring said, ” ‘Carlos’ is going to be one of the major events of 2010, and we could not be happier to be back in business with Olivier Assayas after ‘Summer Hours,’ our friends at Studio Canal and to work with our sister company Sundance Channel to bring this incredible vision about one of the most famous figures in recent history to American audiences.”
