The story of Simón Bolívar, one of history’s most influential political and military leaders, comes to the big screen in director Alberto Arvelo’s sweeping biopic, The Liberator (Libertador).
Édgar Ramírez stars as Bolívar (1783-1830), the still-revered freedom fighter who played a key role in Latin America’s struggle against the Spanish Empire and shaped the destiny of several nations. In military campaigns covering twice the territory traveled by Alexander the Great, Bolívar led Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia to independence from the rule of the Spanish monarchy, bringing ‘liberation’ to these areas rather than conquest.
Today he is considered to be one of the most prominent champions of democracy in Latin America and beyond.
Ramírez is known to American audiences for his roles in Domino (2005), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) and Wrath of the Titans (2012). He’ll soon be taking on an iconic role in the upcoming remake of Point Break, playing Bohdi, the bank-robbing philosopher-surfer so memorably portrayed by Patrick Swayze in the original 1991 film.
The Liberator had its world premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and will open in theaters on Aug. 22.
