‘Point Break’ Reboot Moved to Christmas 2015

Warner Bros. has moved its reboot of “Point Break” back nearly five months from July 31 to Christmas — essentially swapping dates with Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible 5.”

The action-thriller, starring Edgar Ramirez (pictured above) and Luke Bracey, is directed by Ericson Core from Kurt Wimmer’s screenplay. Ramirez plays the part portrayed by Patrick Swayze in the 1991 original, while Bracey plays Johnny Utah, originally acted by Keanu Reeves.

Warner Bros. made the move a week after Paramount decided to move “Mission: Impossible 5″ forward from Christmas to July 31.

Alcon Entertainment began developing the project in 2011, when it acquired rights to the property with plans to set the reboot in the world of extreme sports. Alcon co-chairman Andrew Kosove told Variety that the new date should be attractive to moviegoers — even with Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” launching a week before on Dec. 18.

“With Christmas on a Friday this year, the reality is that there’s room for multiple movies,” he added. “Our film is a really fun mainstream movie.”

“Point Break” is the fourth title set for Christmas. On the day after “Mission: Impossible 5″ moved to July, Sony dated the Will Smith drama “Concussion” on the holiday. Paramount’s “Monster Trucks” and Fox’s Jennifer Lawrence-David O. Russell project “Joy” are also opening on Christmas.
