The boxing biopic from the Weinstein Co. will screen May 16 in the Palais in a festival tribute to the star, who will be in attendance.

Robert De Niro is set to be among the celebrity guests at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where he will present a special screening of his upcoming boxing biopic Hands of Stone.

Directed by Venezuelan filmmaker Jonathan Jakubowicz, with The Weinstein Co. producing and distributing, the film tells the story of Panamanian fighter Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez), who together with his manager and coach, Ray Arcel (De Niro), would enjoy a hugely successful career in the ring that would peak with the now legendary battles against Sugar Ray Leonard.

“I’m excited to be coming back to Cannes, especially with this movie Hands of Stone that I’m so proud of,” De Niro said Tuesday in a statement. “This movie is uplifting, triumphant and a good time for audiences, so I’m looking forward to seeing my friends from across the world of cinema in joining us for this fun event.”

Harvey Weinstein added that the film was “vintage” De Niro.

“Anyone wh‎o knows Bob knows what a passion he has for boxing, and his huge input into this movie made it very realistic and smart,” he said. “On behalf of the company, we are thrilled that the Festival de Cannes chose to honor Bob this year with a special screening. It promises to be a fun time and a fantastic night to pay tribute to one of the great men of our industry.”

De Niro is no stranger to the Croisette, having seen both Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and Roland Joffe’s Mission pick up the Palme d’Or, in 1976 and 1986, respectively, and also heading up the jury in 2011.

Hands of Stone will be screened in the Palais on May 16. The film is set for release on Aug. 26 in the U.S.
