‘Carlos the Jackal’ out on [USA DVD Release]

Carlos the Jackal is a commitment, not an indulgence. French director Olivier Assayas’ monumental work must be seen in its whole to appreciate its parts.

The epic-length production debuted on DVD and Blu-ray this week. I have not seen the stand-alone DVD release, so I can only recommend the remarkable combo pack, a Collector’s Edition combining DVD with Blu-ray. The DVD in this combo pack contains the 165-minute international theatrical cut, which played in most theatres showing Carlos in North America. Good enough. Sigue leyendo

CARLOS named the best foreign language film LA Film Critics

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association announced their awards for 2010 today and CARLOS won the best foreign language film, here the complete list

However, instead of winning director outright, David Fincher shares those honors with Carlos helmer Olivier Assayas. Additionally, the film tied for best score with Alexandre Despalt’s score for Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer. So it wasn’t total domination, but Fincher’s film did come away with the most awards.

At Best Actor, Oscar front-runner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) takes those honors with Carlos star Edgar Ramirez taking runner-up rather than the likes of Jesse Eisenbeg (The Social Network) or James Franco (127 Hours), the two actors most likely competing with Firth for Oscar’s Best Actor.

Elsewhere, Carlos was named Best Foreign Language film ahead of Mother

Congrats to Edgar and all the cast & crew of CARLOS

CARLOS screening at The Cinefest Sudbury Film

2

Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival is excited to announce the introduction of a monthly series of film presentations that will showcase both Canadian and international films. The Cinefest Sudbury Film Series will present a screening on the last Thursday of each month, beginning on November 25, with Olivier Assayas’ Carlos.

CARLOS [Olivier Assayas, France, 2010] Thursday, November 25, 2010 7:00 PM

Born in Venezuela to a lawyer who espoused Marxism, Carlos is the story of Venezuelan revolutionary, Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, who founded a worldwide terrorist organization and raided the OPEC headquarters in 1975 before being caught by the French police. The man who became Carlos was educated in England and the Soviet Union before joining the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in Beirut in 1970. Over the next two decades, he organized and carried out bombings, hostage takings and murders from London to the Hague to Paris and Vienna. In Austria in 1975, he led a group of terrorists in a raid on OPEC headquarters that resulted in tension-filled flights back and forth from Algiers to Tripoli as he attempted to flee to Baghdad. Throughout, he surrounded himself with various adventurers and killers and many women. The story ranges far and wide – from Europe, Latin America to Africa and the Middle East – and details the extraordinary career of the international terrorist better known as Carlos the Jackal. Carlos is distributed in Canada by Mongrel Media.
